Asphalt

Cracked pavement

Cracked sidewalks

The heat rises from it

Stinging smog drifts

Into itching eyes

Seek it out

That blossom striving forth

From the splits

In asphalt streams.

Folly Bridge

Spring days like this

Bring to mind brightly

Oxford, the Thames

Its murky waters put to shame

By the green, grassy banks

Sloping gently towards her

Pubs beckoned and we answered

Their gritty come ons

And whisky whispers

To stagger over

The Folly Bridge pints full

Your tight wire act amusing

Even after the silence

Then the splash

As you tumbled off

And in.

Ink

The distinction lies

Within the paragraph

Each sentence

Handed down

Read line by line

Between them too

Perspective becomes

A line to cross

A lie to fabricate

A conversation initiated

Upon a point

Decided on

A heavy pen

Poised

Over Dollar Store paper

A nickel plated dream

Rusted in their minds.

Four Twelve

Sixty degrees fahrenheit

Sun soaked skin

Warmed through

To your toes

Blood moves

Molasses

A nap

Sounds pretty good

Right now.

Four Ten

Slow melting snow

Exposes piles of month old

Deer shit

Dead mice and dead brown oats

Cast offs

Of winter’s careless wake

Exposed to the sun

That sits higher in the sky

Plans revealed

Like lines on your hands

Fortunes and fates

Gods and flaws.

4*9

The ache in your hands

Will not go away

Arthritic joints

Crumbling cartilage

Stumbling through days

Years ago you were a flame

Meteoric

Euphoric

A dark star

Slipping behind the shadow

Of a moon waxed full

Awake with the knowledge

That love was made of gravity

Awake with the fear

That comes to us all

Slick with sweat

Alone in the night

Aware that the promise

Was in the ending.

Fore Ate

Fore Ate

The walls are close

Rough to the touch

Familiar friends

I can talk to again

The cot creaks

As I rise reluctant

Or lay down exhausted

A single light extinguished

Without my say.

Four Seven

Four Seven

Your stomach churns

With the questions

Where are they?

What happened?

How?

Why?

Clouds obscure the sun

Rains come and never cease

Hope is a paralytic

We long for the grief

To move on.

Four Six

Four Six

Ice out in the swamp

Open water

A chorus of frogs

Telltale signs

Of a tardy springs’

Welcome arrival.

The dirt stained snow

In the front yard

Hangs on like

Lint upon a black jacket

Unwanted

Tenacious.
